Hepatology

Dr. Karan Kumar is an Associate Professor of Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at Mahatma Gandhi Medical College & Hospital, Jaipur. He completed his MD in Internal Medicine from B. J. Medical College, Ahmedabad, followed by a Doctorate in Medicine (DM) in Hepatology from the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS), New Delhi. He subsequently worked as a Consultant at BGS Gleneagles Global Hospital, Bengaluru, gaining further experience in advanced hepatology and liver transplantation.

Dr. Kumar has extensive experience in the management of complex liver diseases, with special interests in acute liver failure, acute-on-chronic liver failure, refractory ascites and portal hypertension, alcohol-associated liver disease, and hepatocellular carcinoma. He is actively involved in liver transplantation, including pre-transplant evaluation and optimization, peri-transplant management, management of post-transplant complications, and long-term care of transplant recipients. He has also been closely involved in the development and growth of the liver transplant program at Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Jaipur, contributing to the establishment of advanced and complex liver transplantation services in Rajasthan.

Dr. Kumar has a strong academic and research profile, with more than 50 publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals and contributions to five book chapters in hepatology and liver transplantation. He serves as a Science Editor for the Indian Journal of Gastroenterology and is a peer reviewer for several national and international medical journals.

He has contributed to important national and international academic initiatives in hepatology, including the INASL Puri Consensus Guidelines on Hepatocellular Carcinoma, and is a member of the APASL Kyoto Consensus Group, contributing to collaborative efforts toward evidence-based recommendations in liver disease.

He is a member of the Young Hepatology Forum of the Indian National Association for Study of the Liver (INASL) and a life member of INASL, the Liver Transplant Society of India (LTSI), and the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG).

His professional interests encompass advanced clinical hepatology, liver transplantation, clinical research, scientific publishing, and medical education, with a focus on improving evidence-based care for patients with complex and advanced liver diseases.
